Winning the War on Slugs
Slugs can devastate a hosta bed overnight. Before reaching for toxic slug bait that can harm pets and wildlife, try these proven natural methods.
1. The Beer Trap
This is a classic for a reason. Bury a shallow container (like a tuna can) so the rim is level with the soil. Fill it with cheap beer. Slugs are attracted to the yeast, crawl in, and drown.
2. Copper Tape
Slugs will not cross copper. It reacts with their slime to give them a mild electric shock. Wrap copper tape around the rims of your pots or raised beds. Ensure there are no overhanging leaves bridging the gap!
3. Diatomaceous Earth (DE)
DE is a powder made of fossilized diatoms. To a soft-bodied slug, it is like crawling over broken glass. Sprinkle a ring of DE around vulnerable plants. Note: It must be reapplied after rain.
