How to Properly Lubricate Your Pruning Shears

How to Properly Lubricate Your Pruning Shears

Maintain Your Most Important Tool

Your pruning shears take a beating. Sap, dirt, and moisture quickly gum up the pivot mechanism, making them hard to squeeze and tiring out your hand.

The Cleaning Phase

First, you must remove the sap. Spray the blades and pivot point with a solvent like WD-40 or rubbing alcohol. Use a stiff wire brush or steel wool to scrub away the built-up resin.

The Lubrication Phase

Once clean and dry, apply a few drops of 3-in-One oil, household machine oil, or a specialized tool lubricant directly into the pivot joint. Open and close the shears repeatedly to work the oil deep into the mechanism.

The Protection Phase

Wipe off any excess oil from the pivot, then lightly wipe down the blades with an oiled rag to prevent rust. Your shears will feel brand new!
