The 3-Minute Fix
Spark plugs ignite the fuel in your engine. Over time, they get covered in carbon deposits (fouling) and fail to spark. Changing them is the cheapest, fastest way to improve engine performance.
The Tools
You only need a spark plug socket wrench (usually 5/8" or 13/16") and a new spark plug (check your manual for the exact part number).
The Process
1. Pull the thick black rubber boot off the end of the spark plug.
2. Fit the socket over the plug and turn counter-clockwise to remove it.
3. Inspect the old plug. If it is black and oily, your engine is running rich or burning oil.
4. Thread the new plug in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
5. Tighten firmly with the wrench (do not overtighten!), and push the rubber boot back on.
