More Than a Bath Soak
Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium is a critical component of chlorophyll, the molecule that makes plants green and allows them to photosynthesize. Many soils are deficient in magnesium.
Greener, Bushier Plants
If your plant leaves are turning yellow between the green veins (interveinal chlorosis), it is starving for magnesium. Dissolve 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt in a gallon of water and apply it as a foliar spray or root drench. You will see deeper green leaves in days.
Sweeter Tomatoes and Peppers
Peppers and tomatoes require abundant magnesium to produce heavy, sweet fruit. Sprinkle a tablespoon around the base of the plant every two weeks during the blooming and fruiting stage.
A Note of Caution
Do a soil test first if possible. If your soil already has high magnesium levels, adding more can block the plant from absorbing calcium, leading to blossom end rot. Use it specifically as a targeted treatment!
