How to Choose the Right Oil for Your Lawnmower

How to Choose the Right Oil for Your Lawnmower

Demystifying Motor Oil

Walking into the oil aisle at the auto parts store can be overwhelming. But choosing the wrong oil for your lawnmower can lead to premature engine wear or catastrophic failure.

The Grade: SAE 30 vs. 10W-30

For decades, small engines required straight-weight SAE 30 oil. This is excellent for hot weather. However, multi-viscosity oils like 10W-30 are now commonly recommended by manufacturers like Honda and Briggs & Stratton, as they perform better in varying temperatures and reduce oil consumption.

Synthetic vs. Conventional

Synthetic oil is objectively better. It withstands higher temperatures without breaking down (crucial for air-cooled small engines) and leaves fewer deposits. For the small extra cost (you only need a quart!), always choose full synthetic.

Check Your Manual

Always default to your specific engine manufacturer's recommendation. And remember to check your oil level before *every* use—running a small engine low on oil will destroy it in minutes.
